DINNER FOR ONE

Sunday, 24th September TIME: 15:00

Etienne Rousseau Theatre

REGISSEUR EN VERVAARDIGER FRANS SWART MET ELMA POTGIETER EN JUSTIN STRYDOM

"Dinner for One" and the satirical local adaptation "Sopper vir Een" are set to grace the stage at the Etienne Rousseau Theatre in Sasolburg on Sunday, September 24th this year. Following a series of sold-out shows across South Africa, the production features Justin Strydom as James the butler and Elma Potgieter as Miss Sophie. The humorous performance promises to be a delightful experience.

"Dinner for One," also known as "The 90th Birthday," has attained cult film status in Germany since its 1963 filming in Hamburg. This uproarious comedy unfolds within the walls of a centuries-old British manor, where the sole remaining family member, Miss Sophie, celebrates her 90th birthday. The entire sketch takes place in the grand dining room, with Miss Sophie at the head of the table, and her 'guests' – all posthumous – occupy their designated seats.

In this side-splitting narrative, James the butler is tasked with serving a four-course meal, each accompanied by a drink. However, as all the 'guests' except Miss Sophie are not among the living, she insists that James impersonate each guest and partake in their drinks, proclaiming the familiar line, "Same procedure as every year, James." The ensuing hilarity unfolds as James maneuvers through the roles of Miss Sophie's departed friends, attempting to create a festive atmosphere.

As an added treat, the production includes "Sopper vir Een," a South African spoof that playfully takes on the original "Dinner for One." Elma Potgieter transforms into the butler while Justin Strydom embodies the character of Miss Sophie. Frans Swart's adaptation introduces a unique South African twist to the classic narrative, ensuring plenty of surprises and laughter for the audience. Elma Potgieter, a versatile figure in the arts, boasts an impressive repertoire as an actress, presenter, writer, linguist, translator, wordsmith, and author. She is celebrated for over fifty Afrikaans short stories and four novels, with her latest novel "Skerwe" unveiled earlier this year.

Justin Strydom, a renowned actor on television, film, and stage, is known for his roles in productions like "Diepe Waters" and "Isidingo." With a background in drama and experience as a voice artist, educator, writer, director, and producer, Strydom brings a dynamic presence to the stage. He also teaches at the AFDA Film School and has appeared in numerous television shows.

The performance, lasting 80 minutes with a 20-minute interval, offers a captivating experience for theatergoers. "Dinner for One" and "Sopper vir Een" provide a delightful blend of comedy and satire, promising an unforgettable evening of laughter and entertainment. The production is further available for corporate functions and fundraising events, generously supported by the Etienne Rousseau Theatre, Lefra Productions, Ambassador Execudrive, Van Loveren Wines, Hollywood Costumes, RSG, Lift, Britz Couriers and Removals, and WS Pianos.
